TubeMaster++ is an open-source project that offers a complete solution to the task of downloading videos from the Web and converting them to other formats. It is probably one of the best free applications of the kind I’ve tried, not only for the number of formats it supports, but also for its great performance. TubeMaster captures media files being played in a web browser and then converts them into multiple formats to make them playable on other devices.

The main window consists of three tabs comprising the main functions of the program. Basically, it will detect the media files being played in the web browser and will download them to a preset folder. It can capture files in FLV, MP4, and MP3 formats. The downloaded videos can be converted into virtually all video and audio formats that you can think of: AVI, MP4, DVD, MP3, OGG, in short, all media formats supported by most portable devices (Palm, Blackberry, Zune, PSP2/3, iPod).

Apart from its main function, TubeMaster adds an MP3 searcher that examines several web sources (dizzler.com, sideload.com) for the requested files or songs, and allows us to download them to the PC. The video search tab works in a similar way; typing in the name of a song or artist, for example, will make the program search on popular videos sites and display the results right away.

Conversion is not limited to the downloaded videos and audio files; we can also use the program to convert any MP3, MP4, FLV, or MOV files that we have in our computer simply by dragging and dropping them into the program interface. And the configuration settings include automatic capture and automatic conversion, among others.

The program requires Java RE installed, and also WinPcap for Windows. If you do not have them installed in your computer, both can be downloaded during the installation process.
